Dots and Boxes

Take turns drawing lines. Close a box to take it and draw again.

How to play dots and boxes

The board is a 6×6 grid of dots with 25 empty boxes between them.

Rules

  • On your turn, draw one line between two dots next to each other.
  • If your line closes a box, the box is yours and you draw again.
  • The game goes on until every line is drawn.
  • Most boxes wins. There are 25 boxes, so it can't be a draw.

Tips to win

  • Don't draw the third side of a box, or your opponent will close it.
  • Near the end someone has to give away a chain of boxes. Make sure yours is the short one.
  • Before each move, count how many boxes it gives away.
